NS Register of Historic Places

In the fall of 2004, Concertia approached Sheer Vision Technologies to design and build the Nova Scotia Registry of Historic Places (NSRHP) administrative web site (currently not publicly accessible). Work was contracted through the Nova Scotia Department of Education's Internet and Technical Services Division. They then subcontracted the work Concertia.

The NSRHP web site is part of the Heritage Property Initiative. In addition to collecting and displaying information for the HPI, the application also sends XML data about Municipally and Provincially Registered Properties to its federal counterpart: the Canadian Registry of Historic Places (CRHP) by consuming a web service provided by CRHP for that purpose. CRHP lists Registered Properties from across Canada and requires provincial registration systems to send validating XML property listings to their web service. The listings are subsequently evaluated by an administrator prior to listing. The NSRHP site also manages Built Heritage properties that are not listed federally.

The NSRHP web application is a property registry that is used by the NS Heritage Property Office, Municipal Registrars, and County Museum Registrars around the province to record information about Registered Properties and Built Heritage in their areas. Historical data was imported and ongoing data entry is done by those groups. Once entered, the property listings are submitted to the NS Registrar's office for review (via the application) before being listed for public view and/or submission to the federal site. The public listings web site is currently under development by the NS Department of Education ITS division.

A requirements document had been previously prepared by a third party and was used as the basis for a reassessment and clarification of the requirements with the client (the HPI NS Registrar's team at the NS Museum). This phase was followed by the design and implementation of the web application.

Sheer Vision's expertise in software design and project management kept the project on track and enabled the coordination of the different project resources and stakeholders from both Concertia, the Department of Education's ITS division (application developers, web designers, and a project management liaison), and the NS Registrar.
